475 kilometers south of Paris, Serge Belamant was born in Tulle, France in 1953. For his primary schooling, Belamant traveled to South Africa and attended “The Highlands North High School for Boys.” It was in highschool where Serge Belamant first learned to speak and write English, along with flourish as a student-athlete playing Rugby and Chess. First studying engineering and computer systems, Belamant decided to discontinue those pathways and begin taking third year courses in information systems. However, this change in majors would have required him to retake courses he previously passed. Because of this, Serge Belamant never earned a college degree.

Belamant began working at Matrix as a civil engineer. He started working with IBM computers data analysis and special applications to measure the water levels in South African dams. These programs not only helped predict future droughts in the region but were also laid the foundation that taught Belamant statistical methods, graphics interfaces, digital mapping, and road network analysis. To make ends meet, Belamant also held a plethora of side jobs that were in the same industry and helped him further a career in computer systems and engineering.

After leaving Matrix, Belamant spent a short stint of time creating the SASWITCH System, After that venture, Belamant founded Net1 and was hired by Visa to develop The Chip Offline Pre-Authorized Card. Net1 continued its expansion with Belamant and made payments more secure for the average person,”an achievement equal to Henry Ford” one reporter stated.
