Securus Technologies seeks to end to threat of contraband cellular phones in nation’s prisons

Throughout the United States prison system, one of the most serious threats facing penal institutions is that posed by illicit cellular devices. While the introduction of unauthorized cellular devices into the nation’s prisons may appear to be somewhat benign, at least to those not familiar with the operation of penal institutions, the threat these devices can pose is nothing short of existential. All too often, cellular devices that have been illegally smuggled into the nation’s prisons have been used to seriously undermine the safety of both the institution and the public, at times even being used to order the murder of guards and civilians.

Prison gangs cannot be permitted easy and reliable communication

The dynamic within the nation’s prisons often approximates that of a war zone. On one side, there are the guards, prison officials and others tasked with keeping the institutions safe and orderly and protecting the public from the violent criminals housed there. On the other side, there are highly organized prison gangs, many of which have the means and motive to carry out some of the worst offenses seen in the country. Caught in the middle is the public and even other inmates who do not belong to any gang.

One of the most effective weapons in this state of virtual war that exists between paramilitary-like criminal prison gangs and the officers who try to keep them in check is that of communications. Whether high tech or low, a gang that is able to effectively communicate among its members, both on the inside and outside of prison, will be a formidable force, capable of creating serious mayhem. One of the worst possible situations to face prison staff today is when a criminal gang is able to easily, quickly and effectively communicate with the outside world. This is usually the result of gang leaders getting hold of multiple illegal cellular devices.

Because cellular devices that have been smuggled into the prison allow gang leaders to make unauthorized calls with the outside world on a nearly unlimited basis, they have been implicated in everything from high-level drug trafficking, including introducing large quantities of deadly drugs into the prison system itself, all the way to ordering hits on prison guards and witnesses.

But now, Securus Technologies, one of the most important providers of inmate communications and prison security technology in the country, has rolled out a new system called the Wireless Containment System. This novel technology enables prison staff to deny all unauthorized calls being placed within the prison property. It also facilitates the tracking of illegal cellular devices, leading officers to their location with pinpoint accuracy.

In prisons where the system has been deployed, the incidence of unauthorized calls has been reduced to nearly zero.
